What is your Surf Level?

Beginner/Level 1 to Advanced/Level 4

Knowing where you are at in your surfing can be a difficult thing to quantify

Our focus here at Talalla Surf is to help you become a more confident, independent and stoked surfer at any level!
And this is the system to make it happen!

 

The Surf Levels System

To make it easier though we have devised a clear Levels System.There are Four different Levels Each of which can be broken up into 2 separate components your Surf Skills and your Ocean Awareness.As you progress through your surfing experience it is important that you are gaining new knowledge both in the domain of Surf Skills but also with regard to Ocean Awareness. 

Surf Skills

These skills can be thought of as related to your Physical Body. This can include anything from the Level 1 ‘Flexibility and Strength’ to ‘Pop Up – onto your surfboard in the whitewash. To the Level 3 requirements of ‘Shifting your weight from rail to rail and from nose to tail when performing Bottom & Top turn Maneuvers

Ocean Awareness

These skills can thought of as related to your ‘Ability to Interpret a Surf Lineup’. Again this could be anything from Level 1 ‘Picking the correct whitewash waves and understanding Risks and Hazards at a Beach break.’ To Level 3 ‘When to select a carving maneuvers and when to select a top turn maneuver whilst surfing along a right hand Reef Break’.

  • Recognizing hazards in the surf and how to avoid potential dangers
  • Becoming comfortable in <1m waves
  • Positioning in the ‘reform’ lineup
  • Recognizing optimal reform waves
  • Techniques for getting ‘out the back’
  • Positioning and Surfboard Control in Green Waves
  • Surf Etiquette

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO AT THE END OF THE LEVEL 1 SURF CAMP?

  • Confidently and independently paddle out a reform Beach Break, select your own whitewash waves and be able to ride the waves their full length.
  • Turning both in a Left Hand and Right Hand Direction.
  • Understand the requirements of getting ‘out the back’ into the green waves and be able to catch Green Waves with manual or verbal coach assistance.
  • Working towards becoming independent in catching your own Green Waves.

PRE-REQUISITES

  • Age Requirement – There is NO AGE REQUIREMENT to learn to surf.
  • Fitness Requirement – There are NO FITNESS REQUIREMENTS for learning to surf.

Level 2 SurfCamp - Beginner/Intermediate

 

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SURF SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN?

  • Reinforcing the Pop-Up for Green Wave Takeoffs
  • Paddle Technique Review
  • Changing Board Size for the appropriate balance of Maneuverability, Stability and Speed
    • Selecting the appropriate board for your style and surf conditions
  • Reinforcing Rail to Rail weight shift for turning your board
    • Commencing Change of Direction/Carving Turns
    • Driving turns through upper body movement
  • Reinforcing Getting Out The Back Strategies – Duck Diving & Turtle Rolls

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT OCEAN AWARENESS?

  • Recognizing Peaks and Shoulders
  • Determining Positioning Points in a Surf Lineup
    • Learning to know ‘Where you are in the lineup and why?”
  • Recognizing when to Accelerate and Decelerate along the Open Face of Green Waves
  • Being able to identify different wave heights and appropriate response
  • Becoming a ‘Dynamic Surfer’ as opposed to a ‘Static Surfer’ in the lineup
  • Conserving Paddle Energy through Optimal Positioning
  • Confidence in Big Waves and Reef Breaks

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO AT THE END OF THE LEVEL 2 SURF CAMP?

  • Independently assess a surf lineup for optimal position for your desired wave type
  • Independently recognizing appropriate wave for your current confidence and Surf Level
  • Consistently making ‘the takeoff’ on unbroken/green waves
  • Feeling confident in turning left and right – front side and backside surfing
  • Surfing along the trim line of the Open-Face waves
  • Changing direction on the Trim Line and fading back to power source

PRE-REQUISITES

  • Having Completed Level 1 at Talalla Surf  OR
  • Independent & confident getting ‘out the back’ in 1.5m Surf
  • Able to Paddle and Re-Position in a Lineup for 1 hour
   
  
  

Level 3 SurfCamp - Intermediate

 

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SURF SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN?

  • Moving away from the Trim Line to generate speed and perform Maneuvers
  • Slight deviation above and below Trim Line to generate Speed and Flow
  • Deviating from Trim Line to the Flats and to the Lip of the Wave
  • Commencing Bottom Turns
  • Progressing Bottom Turns         – Front side Bottom Turns         – Backside Bottom Turns
  • Commencing Carving Top Turns
  • Progressing Carving Top Turns         – Front side Carving Top Turns         – Backside Carving Top Turns
  • Changing Angle of Attack on wave face depending on the type of maneuver that is to be performed
  • Round House cut backs to return to power source

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT OCEAN AWARENESS?

  • Positioning yourself in the line-up to catch a Variety of wave types
  • Recognizing the Optimum wave type during surf session
  • Recognizing the optimum wave type for Certain Maneuvers during surf session
  • How to position your self in Bigger and more Critical surf
  • Determining the best location on a wave to perform bottom and top turns
  • Negotiating Flat Sections on a wave
  • Getting around Sections

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO AT THE END OF THE LEVEL 3 SURF CAMP?

  • Generate more Speed Down the Line
  • Perform Bottom and Carving Top Turns consistently
  • Determine the Ideal place on the wave to perform Bottom and Carving Top Turns
  • Increase the effectiveness of your Position in a Line Up to increase Wave Count
  • All of these skills will help increase your Level of Satisfaction with your surfing and the amount of Enjoyment you get from each wave

PRE-REQUISITES

  • Having completed Level 2 at Talalla Surf
  • Catching your own unbroken/green waves – independently and consistently.
  • Able to go along the Trim-Line of the wave and surf the entire wave
   
  
 

Level 4 SurfCamp - Advanced

 

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SURF SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN?

  • Deciding on appropriate maneuver for wave section
  • Learning weight shift and body movements for         – Carving Turns         – Top Turns         – Laybacks         – Aerials         – Barrels
  • Increasing the Speed, Power and Flow of each maneuver, becoming more Radical in your Approach
  • Optimizing all your current surf skills

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT OCEAN AWARENESS?

  • Selecting the Appropriate Section on a wave for a certain maneuver
  • Anticipating the next section, being one step ahead in your surfing
  • Dealing with the Unexpected Section
  • Dealing with a big wave hold down

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO AT THE END OF THE LEVEL 4 SURF CAMP?

  • Increase the Speed, Power and Drive of your surfing
  • Refine a variety of different maneuvers
  • Be comfortable in Larger Surf
  • Perform the appropriate maneuvers for the wave section
  • Anticipate sections further down the line and dealing with the Unexpected Section

PRE-REQUISITES

  • Having completed Level 3 at Talalla Surf
  • Taking of confidently on a variety of wave types
  • Catching your own unbroken/green waves – independently and consistently
  • Able to perform Bottom and Top Turns consistently
  • Be comfortable in surf > 2 meters
  • Surfing with Speed, Drive and Power
