The Dutch presents is till visible in this Sri Lankan town. Used as a port in accient times (said to be the legendary Tarshish of the Bible), Galle was established as Sri Lankas first international business and trading centre. Today, Galle is the bustling provincial capital and administrative centre of the south. Unawatuna Bay is reef protected and thus safe for swimming and snorkelling. Gall also accommodates a World Heritage Site: The old Dutch fort which covers a total of 36 hectares, including the Groote Kerk, which is still in great condition, the old bell tower and a sewage system regulated by the tides. In Galle you will still find the Dutch pillo lace and fine ebony carving and gempolishing.
