Matara is a coastal city located about 160 km south of Colombo. Matara offers a nice stretch of beach for swimming and sunset strolling and has fabulous fruit and vegetable markets on Sundays. During the Dutch occupation two forts were build of which the larger one comprises most of the city. The smaller fort is open for tourists to visit and also contains the city library.
